Introduction

Using a hand loom in his studio and silk threads that he naturally dyes himself, Yasuaki Kuroda creates textile pieces that reflect his philosophical research into topics such as free and constrained will, the group versus the individual, discord and congruence. Kuroda doesn’t see his works as being the same as oil on canvas paintings. For him the “world” constructed inside the plane of interwoven silk threads is not something that is supposed to convey his fantasies or unconscious particularities, but the evidence of the way he was confronting each particular piece in its creation: Kuroda’s weaving shows that singular way in which the artist was connecting himself with the image when he was in the process of making it. This knot between the artist and the work itself is what the work exhibits.

For example, in some series of works Kuroda denies himself the choice of a thread=colour, but doesn’t leave this up to complete randomness. He rolls the dice. The particular sequence of numbers from the throws of the dice, that are aligned with particular threas=colours - his Lot - defines the texture of the piece, presenting the fate of the artist himself through the fate of the intertwined threads that are selected. The colours of the textile are the colours of Kuroda’s defining fortune, the colours of the time the artist spent creating his text(ile), and here it is not a metaphor any more.

The combination of such conceptual approach with the strong visual impact of the hypnotic nature of his works has pushed the artist into public recognition in his own country, where he has won several awards since completing the textile course at Musashino Art University. Now Kuroda is preparing for his first solo show, happening this summer at the Tokyo Wonder Site art centre.
